The Towne Restaurant is located at the corner of Allen Street and Elmwood Avenue.  It started as a small lunch-counter hot dog place that featured in Red Hots with Chili.  Today it's a full service Greek restaurant that can seat 150 people.

Nowadays the Towne is tame compared to earlier times.  Late at night a few gay people wander in, but they mostly keep to themselves.  Imagine instead the Towne packed solid to the doors, while just about everyone in the room is gay or lesbian.  That's what Saturday night at 4:00 am was like.

This late-night gay crowd was comic insanity.  Each "dish" was more outrageous than the last as the queens tried to top each other.  Hip straight couples would stop in to enjoy the early-morning foolishness.

I lived in Allentown for a while in the late 80s right after college and was one of those in the standard routine of closing the bars then heading to the Towne for tons of food. It was a scene, for sure!
